RECOMMENDED FOR YOUR SPRING HOLIDAY IN VILLNÖSS:
Set off to discover flower-dotted Alpine meadows and unspoilt woodland on this wheelchair-friendly nature trail, which gently negotiates its way around the Zanseralm hut. This picturesque loop trail begins and ends at the Zans car park, and allows you to experience the magic of the Dolomites from up close. There are several stations along the way providing interesting facts about the local flora and fauna, as well as a deer park where you will be within touching distance of majestic stag and deer.
Walking time: 1 hour 15 minutes
Starting from the sunny village of Teis, three geological trails provide fascinating insights into the geological and botanical peculiarities of the area, including information about how the famous Teis geodes formed. Three exciting hikes for you to choose from… which one will it be?
Geopath No. 1: The geological and botanical trail
This trail leads past the Vereinshausplatz square with its granite fountain (its fresh spring water is perfect for quenching your thirst on a warm spring day) and the church. Follow the trail behind the ‘Lahne’ (path No. 11) until you reach a rest area with a small geological site where you can take a breather and experiment with stones.
Geopath No. 2: The loop trail around the Mesner Lacke lake
Starting from the Mineralogy Museum, walk along Brunngasse (granite fountain with drinking water, benches and a young beech tree) northwards until you reach the irrigation pond, which is beautifully encased between meadows. From there, a pram and wheelchair-friendly loop trail leads around the Mesner Lacke lake. If you listen carefully, you will hear not just the croaking frogs, but also the tales the rocks have to tell about the local geology. The return route to the museum is via the playground in the wood and Schelmbühl.
Geopath No. 3: The hill of the Holy Sepulchre
If you’re on your way to Teis, you can’t miss it: the hill of the Holy Sepulchre. Climb it, and you will travel back in time to the trenches of the First World War. At the top, take in the amazing view of the Geisler peaks, Mt. Rittnerhorn and the Zillertal Alps.
What’s this heavenly scent? It comes from the many different flowers, herbs and shrubs that have earned Castle Trauttmansdorff’s botanical gardens their international renown. They open every year in spring, making the town of Meran an ideal destination for a day trip with the whole family.
